It is a long time – a ten years wait for registering a hit. Maybe not a surprise in an industry that is known for fixing awards, and manipulating careers. His first songs appeared in 1949. Confined to B/C grade films for a large part of his career, Farooque Kaiser had to wait till 1958 before he could lay his claim to fame based on a song that would be recognized as a popular hit with the listening public.

Remembering Farooque Kaiser on the anniversary of his passing away (10th November).

Farooque Sb’s career is intimately linked with the golden age of melody in Hindi films. His debut is the time when this golden period of melody was just starting. His own timeless contributions can be gauged by the films he was associated with – ‘Madaari’ (1959), ‘Passport’ (1961), ‘Parasmani’ (1963), ‘Shikari’ (1964), ‘Prince’ (1969), ‘Taxi Driver’ (1973), ‘Qurbani’ (1980) and many more. He started his career with the 1949 film ‘Rooplekha’. After 10 years, with 1958 film ‘Aji Bas Shukriya’, working with music director Roshan, he registered his first hit song in the history books – “Saari Saari Raat Teri Yaad Sataaye”.

The film “Main Hoon Alladin’ was released in 1965. With music by Usha Khanna, the film had two song writers. Of the seven songs in this film, four are from the pen of Farooque Kaiser, and the remaining are written by Javed Anwar. Ah yes, Javed Anwar is the pen name of the duo songwriters – Javed for Manohar Lal Khanna and Anwar for Raahil Gorakhpuri. The film is produced under the banner of Ramkishan Films and is directed by Mohammed Hussain. The cast of actors includes Ajit, Sayeeda Khan, Madan Puri, Maruti, Jagirdar, Shaam Kumar, David, Habeeb, Khurshid, Ratanmala, Mumtaz Begum, Bala Ram, Azam, Daud, Lala Nazar, Munshi Munakka, Mustafa, and Sabir etc. In this film, Sonik, of the Sonik Omi duo of music directors, was the assistant to Usha Khanna in the music department. The song is sung by Mukesh, and is performed on screen by Ajit.

A notable hit from 1965, this is another song that was heard very often in the radio listening days. The memories of this song have kept it alive and fresh in the mind, even though it is now almost five decades since it was heard for the first time. Only if religion had not fallen out of favor with the film industry. Kya kahen, sab paise ki maya hai (what to say, it is all a money game). The producers say that the public is not interested. And so they will lose money if they make religious films. And so we have been seeing less and less of religious and spiritual themes on screen. Rather, I do not recall seeing any title that indicates a religious film, in the past decade or so.

Arre, you must be wondering, why this concern about religion in films. Well, besides all other concerns that could be listed, one concern is that we lost opportunities to see more of ‘Yamraaj’ roles that could have been played by Premnath. You see, just as Jeevan specialized in the role of Naarad, and Dara Singh specialized in the role of Hanuman in Hindi films, similarly Premnath was also gearing up to take on the role of ‘Yamraaj’ on screen. He has played this role very effectively in a couple of films – ‘Raani Aur Lalpari’ (1975) and ‘Lok Parlok’ (1979). But then, religion slowly became ‘out-of-fashion’ with the film producers, and Premnath hung up his performing shoes in 1985. Varnaa kya baat hai, that we could have seen more of him in this role. :)

Remembering Premnath on the anniversary of his birth today (21st November).

Born as Premnath Malhotra, this day in 1926, in Peshawar, he was a young man of 21 years when the partition happened, and the family moved to Jabalpur (in Madhya Pradesh). Being interested in and involved with the theatre from his school and college years, his interest was more in a career as an actor. He did not stay with family, and moved to Bombay, to make a career in films.

His first film was ‘Rangeen Zamaana’ from 1948 (also titled as ‘Ajeet’), in which he was paired opposite to Monica Desai. But more importantly, on reaching Bombay, he made acquaintance with and became a very close friend of Raj Kapoor, who was just starting with his RK Films venture. Although I have found no specific reference for it, it is possible that the two families knew each other. As is known, Prithviraj Kapoor was from Lyallpur and had done his college education in Peshawar before moving to Calcutta to start his film career with New Theatres.

Premnath connected into the industry, more than just a performer. He also got connected with other film families. One of his sisters got married to Raj Kapoor. Another sister got married to Prem Chopra. His own family and children have further enriched the industry. His brothers Rajendranath and Narendranath got their own place in limelight of the industry. So did his son Prem Kishen, whose children continue to be active in films – Akanksha, as an actress and Siddhartha as a director.

Over a period of almost four decades, Premnath appeared in close to 150 films. In his early years, he was popular as a dashing young hero, but later he found greater success as a character artist. Till about mid 1960s, he continued to appear as the lead actor in films. In 1963 came ‘Rustam Sohrab’ in which he played the role of Sohrab, son of Rustam, role played by Prithviraj. Then in 1965 came the film ‘Janam Janam Ka Saath’ in which he was the lead actor opposite to Kamini Kaushal. As I review his filmography, this might well be his last film as a hero. In 1966 came the films ‘Amrapali’ and ‘Teesri Manzil’ in which he clearly struck out towards the path of character portrayals. Considering his strong on screen presence and his portrayals of the roles, he found a more effective success and popularity in his later years. I have always fancied his roles in ‘Teesri Manzil’, as the surprise villain revealed at the end, and in ‘Johnny Mera Naam’ (1970), as the vociferous Ranjit, younger brother of Rai Sb Bhupender Singh (role played by Sajjan), whom he imprisons and impersonates for his own criminal machinations. Of course there have been more memorable performances, but these two probably caught my fancy at a more impressionable age. Other roles that I would prefer to list are his performances in ‘Shor’ (1972), ‘Bobby’ (1973), ‘Ishq Ishq Ishq’ (1974), and Dharmatma (1975). That does not mean I have any lack of preference for his earlier roles. His performances in ‘Aag’ (1948), ‘Barsaat’ (1949), ‘Awaara’, ‘Baadal’, ‘Naujawaan’, ‘Buzdil’, ‘Shokhiyaan’ (all 1951)’, ‘Aan’ (1952), ‘Aurat’ (1953), ‘Aab e Hayaat’ (1955), ‘Changez Khan’ (1957), ‘Forty Days’ (1959) are memories to be relished.

I present this song (as homework assigned to me :) ), from the 1975 film of the same name – ‘Dhoti Lota Aur Chowpatty’. In this film, Premnath plays the role of a roadside vendor who sells pao bhaji at Chowpatty. His small vendor van has ‘Imaandar Pao Waala’ written on it. The film is produced and directed by Mohan Choti – ah yes, I was also surprised to see this name. The film has a whole galaxy of actors, some of them are making appearances as themselves in the film. The five songs in the film are written by three poets, Hasrat Jaipuri, Gulshan Baawra and Kulwant Jaani. This song is from the pen of Hasrat Jaipuri. The music is by Shyamji Ghanshyamji. The singing voice is that of Mukesh. The scenario is the streets of Bombay and the beach of Chowpatty, where a whole universe of human interactions exist. And Premnath is his exuberant self as he performs this song.

Not much is known about “Shin Shinaaki Boobla Boo”(1952). Our beloved inhouse encyclopaedia, Mr Arunkumar Deshmukh is one of the few who watched this movie during its first and only run. Here is what he has to say about this movie:-

When I heard this name SHIN SHINAKI BOOBLA BOO-1952 for the first time, I was perplexed as to what it meant. It was only after I saw the film in the 50s, that I came to know that Shin Shinaki is heroine’s name and Boobvla Boo is Hero’s name in the film ! One may wonder about the strange names. These were the fruits of the fertile imagination of the story and screenplay writer P L Santoshi and his assistant for this film Baleshwar Guru.

Santoshi wrote a story based on the Parsi Theatre Fantasy, in which there was ample opprtunity for attractive dancing and singing for Sadhana Bose and his favourite Rehana.

C Ramchandra who was a partner of his friend Santoshi in these ventures experimented with the film’s music by using jazz and Latin American Rhythm.

This was a revenge story. The heroine Sadhana Bose-Shin Shinaki-wants to kill Taishi who had killed her parents. Boobla Boo(Ranjan) who is a Dacoit helps her in this. After Taishi is killed, Shin Shinaki wants to kill his daughter Rehana too, with whom Ranjan falls in love.

In 1952 Government had amended the Cinematograph act, by which it got a right to ban any film, even after Censor certificate was issued, if the Governmentt felt that the film was worth banning.

Shin Shinaki Boobla Boo was the First film to become its victim. Though the film had been passed by central censor Board with a U certificate, the government banned the film stating that “The film has a low moral tone and accords glamour and heroism to criminals, treating sacred subject irreverently and it is against the interests of public decency and morality.”

The producers, Santoshi Production Limited appealed against the decision and subsequently the ban was revoked but it had killed the commercial success of the film anyway. The film did not come up even for a second run.

Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from the movie. This song, which is the title song cum theme song of the movie is sung by Lata and C Ramchandra. P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by C Ramchandra.

“Aawaara Abdullah”(1963) was produced by Bany Talwar and M R Kirpal and directed by Tara Harish for Hanna Films. The movie had Dara Singh, Parvin Chaudhary, Chandra Shekhar, Rajan Kapoor, Uma Dutt, Shri Bhagwan, Hari Mallik, Ram,Bihari Singh, Baxi,H.Shukla, Jaggi, Ajit Soni,Subhash, Raj Rani, Rekha, Radha Rani, Bhagwan, Helen with wrestlers viz. John-de-Silva(Europe Champion), Al Rod Goa(West Indies Champion), And Randhava.

Today (30 december 2014) is the 27th death anniversary of N Datta. Here is a song from “Aawaara Abdullah” (1963) as a tribute to N Datta. The song is sung by Rafi and Geeta Dutt. The song is picturised on Bhagwan and an unidentified lady. Praveen Chaudhary and Dara Singh are also visible in the picturisation.

“Sanyaasi”(1975) was directed by Sohanlal Kanwar for Filmnagar, Bombay. The movie had Manoj Kumar, Hema Malini, Premnath, Prem Chopra, Arun Irani, Nazima, Pran, Indrani Mukherji, Sulochana, Kamini Kaushal, Raj Mehra, Shailesh Kumar, Chandrashekhar, Helen, Jayshree T, Aparna Chaudhary, Dhumal, V Gopal, C S Dubey, Rajpal, Kuljeet, Keshav Rana, Madhup Sharma, Kamal Deep, Narmada Sharkar, Tuntun , Hari Shivdasani, Brahm Bhardwaj, Yunus Parwez, Murad, Bihari, Sabina etc in it.

The movie had nine songs in it which were penned by as many as six lyricists.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past.

Vishweshwar Sharma (16 december 1933- 30 december 2014) was one of the six lyricists of this movie. The title song -“Chal sanyaasi mandir mein” from this movie, which became the most popular song of the movie, was penned by Vishweshwar Sharma. This song finished fifth in Binaca geetmala final of 1976. This song also earned Vishweshwar Sharma a nomination for Filmfare best lyricist award in 1976.

Everywhere we see people are doing a recap or recount of all the things that occurred in the last year. There are people who are doing count down of the songs that released in the year. There are others who are posting photos of the year that was, on the friendly social networking sites. (In this we are aided by the site itself in choosing random photos that was published by us through the year). So I thought let me also see how the year was for me.

To begin with it started as any normal year would. We had had a get together of family at my brother-in-law’s place for New Year’s Eve. Next day was a working day. Then came our plans for Sankrant. This was again a normal day with some religious activity thrown in. Then my daughter decided to take a break from her job so that she could spend time with us and all her relatives and grand parents as she knew that once she got in to full time college for her post-grad she would not get to enjoy. Fair enough. But that was not how it was destined to be. The person who is the script writer for all of us had different thoughts.

The trip that we were going to undertake for my sister-in-law’s baby shower (it has various names in Indian rituals) turned out to be a trip to see my mom who took sick all of a sudden. Not normal for any of us as we have never seen my mom sick save for a minor cold once or twice. Then my daughter decided that she would change her travel plans and stay put with her pet naani. But the others in the family chugged along with the routines in their lives. And then my brother’s kid arrived in May, a day of joy for the whole Peevesie Clan. Also the doctor certified that mom was responding to the treatment. More joy all around. Then another joyous occasion followed. We celebrated my dearest Mom-In-Laws’ 80th birthday in May. So that meant May was a very good month for us.

June brought more good tidings. My Peevesie got admission in a college of her choice and a course she had set her heart after. In between all this I went on two vacations also. Post Diwali the weather changed in the country as well as with my Mom. And that was the end of her story.

After that it has been a generally dull year with at least one sad news coming per week. As if to herald the good tidings of the festive season my cousin sent me a message on Christmas day that he had been blessed with a baby.

I think the song from “K3G” (as Karan Johar’s “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham” was coded back then), has a perfect song for summing up all that I felt about the way 2014 went for me. The song is written by Sameer, music directors are Jatin Lalit. Lata Mangeshkar opens the song at the start of the movie. And then it plays at various times in the movie, and in the voice of Sonu Nigam also once.  On screen, there is a fair collection of actors who are visible in the accompanying video clips.  To list – Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bhaduri, Sushma Seth, Achla Sachdev, Farida Jalaal, Rani Mukherji, Shahrukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, plus a few others.

There are still 3 days left in 2014 as I write this. So with this post, here is hoping that this “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham” year changes into 2015 which will have more Khushi and less Gham. So that was my report card for 2014.

Though I am not very good in remembering dates (especially important dates, you know which ones :) ), I often get saved by someone or the other. I would almost forget the birthday of my wife but for the fact that we have a daughter who can never forget birthdays and who never fails to remind me of such dates.

And if you are a regular internet user (as I am), one finds that one’s email account keeps tabs of such important dates for you. So when I got up early in the morning today (2 january 2014) and switched on the computer, my gmail account, in collaboration with facebook, reminded me that today was the birthday of not one but two regulars of this blog, namely Peevesie’s mom and Pradeep Raghunathan.

I am not the only one who is aware of their birthdays, of course. Avinash Scrapwala is also one who keeps an watch over important dates like this. He not only greeted them in a comment in the blog, he also sent me the lyrics of a song for the occasion.

This is a song which I thought was discussed long back, but it turns out that I was wrong. This song has somehow escaped being posted in the blog for some reason or the other though four other songs from this movie have been discussed.

This song has to be a remarkable song for its lyrics. This song is nearly eight minutes long, which is nearly three times longer than a typical HFM song. One may expect such a song to have lyrics containing lots and lots of words. But it turns out that the song has just one line or one may call it as two lines and that is all. The same lines are repeated over and over again for nearly eight minutes and you have your song. :) This must have been the easiest assignment for Aannd Bakshi in his five decades long career as a luyricist. :)

Here is this song from “Aap Ke Deewaane” (1980). This song is sung by Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Amit Kumar and chorus. The song is lip synced by Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor and Rakesh Roshan who lip sync and dance on this song, which was one of the earliest songs of a genre called “Disco”. “Disco” was a fad which was then catching the imagination of HFM lovers and it would soon become an music form that would spread like an epidemic in HFM. :)

Today (4 january 2015) is the 90th birth anniversary of actor Pradeep Kumar (4 january 1925- 27 october 2001). Pradeep Kumar, who made his acting debut in Hindi in 1952 in Anandmath played the lead role of Salim in “Anarkali”(1953). After that, he bacame typedcast in the characters of King/Prince/Zameendaar etc. :) :) In addition to playing Salim, he played Shahjahaan as well (in Tajmahal(1963), as also a Royal of foreign origin in Yahudi Ki Ladki (1957).

When not playing such roles, Pradeep Kumar would play a shayar or police inspector or spy. :)

On the occasion of Pradeep Kumar’s birth anniversary, here is a song from “Zindagi Aur Maut”(1965) where Pradeep Kumar plays a spy who tends to wear red rose on his coat when he has to meet some important person. :)

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle and it is picturised on Faryal who was making her debut in Hindi movies with this movie. Our intrepid spy is visible in the picturisation. Other who can also be seen include N A Ansari, and Johny Walker, among others.

If you live in a place like mine, you may think that the local administration cannot see public happy and they devise ways and means to put public to inconvenience on a regular basis. For instance, whenever I go to one of the important roads in my town (called Link road), I find some or the other construction work going on there all the time. And the work is carried out in such a manner that may put the public to the maximum inconvenience. And just when the people may have adapted themselves and begun to learn to live with that inconvenience, some new method of torture is devised by the imaginative administrators. :)

Two years ago, the standard method was to pick a busy cross road and dig up its centre. Naturally it would lead to traffic jams all the time while construction work would go on at a leisurely pace. When the construction work would be over after a few months, they would decide to repair the road. They would pick the portion of the road that would offer them the best opportunity of creating traffic jam and do their work merrily.

That road incidentally was full of trees and a few trees were located right at the centre of the road. These trees caused regular traffic jams on that road. Some day the local administrator decided that the trees have to go so that the road can be widened.

Very noble sentiments indeed. But how did they go about it ?

I have seen on TV (Discovery and other similar channels) that trees are uprooted and planted elsewhere. Later I came to know that relocation of trees have been done in India as well. If fact the last time I went to Jabalpur, I was told by my wife that a big banyan tree in the centre of the city was relocated elsewhere.

No such high tech measures in this town inhabited by simple minded people and administrators. They arranged for hacksaws and hacked down around 40 odd trees on the road (there were 80 odd trees on the road). This work was done on weekends when there was lesser traffic and more importantly because the courts were closed so that some “spoilsport” nature lovers may not be able to approach the court and obtain a stay. Though the trees would be hacked down promptly on the weekend, such promptness would be missing when it came to clear the felled trees from the road. As a result, that road would be impossible to use for road traffic for the next several days.

Just when things would settle down again, one more weekend would come and the remaining 40 odd trees would also be hacked down, and you guessed it, the felled trees would once again put public to inconvenience for the next several days.

Many days later, trees would be removed but traffic jam would still take place because the gaps/ projections left by the recently deceased trees would hamper smooth flow of traffic. But people would grin and bear, hoping that things can only get better.

THe road would finally begin to look wider and people would be able to drive on less clogged manner. What is more they would now have more space for their car to park. One such happy driver would park his car at a vacant place and go for some shopping. When he would come back and start his car, he would be unable to start his car and what is more a couple of traffic cops would descend on him. “You have parked on a no parking area so your car has been impounded”- he would be informed. The hapless car owner would come out and find a lock being fixed on his front tyre. But where is the “No Parking” sign here, he would wonder. The traffic cops would lead him to their superior, who would impose a fine and the relieved car owner would be happy to be allowed to go away.

The car owner would next day survey the entire length of the road to find out if there are any sections which mentions “Parking Zone” or “No Parking Zone” on the road. He would fail to detect any such signs. So he would righly conclude thatthe absence of such boards were a deliberate ploy by the traffic cops to supplement their meagre earnings.

Some local administrator would visit some other place (Kota perhaps ?) and find that vehicles were being parked in the centre of the road there. So he would come back and decide that the town (no just this road of the town), will have vehicle parking on the centre of the road ! So the road would begin to have cars and two wheelers being parked in the centre. Roadside mechanics would take advantage and would no perform their repair work on vehicles right on the centre of the road. :)

The arrangement would begin to run smoothly. But this arrangement would soon be withdrawn, perhaps at the behest of the traffic cops with dwindled extra earning. So the road would go back to the earlier arrangement, with no clearcut boards for Parking/ No Parking zones, much to the glee of traffic cops. :)

Now the administration would go to the other extreme. It would be decided that the road would now have road divider. So the road would be dug up right at the centre. And this dug up portion would be the width of a minor Panama Canal. :) So the road traffic would once again begin to crawl on the road.

In short, this road stays in a state of flux all the time with some construction or the other always planned, specifically meant to throw the vehicular traffic off gear for most of the time.

Simple minded people still try to brave their way through that road, but people like me have found out alternative methods. I have discovered alternative routes that allow me to beat the traffic congestion on that road. On the last occasion that I was foolish enough to go to that road, I found myself stuck in a traffic jam due to a procession. Yes, processions too pick this road for impact. I wisely diverted my vehicle to another road and found my way back home.

I cannot help but feel that the administrators of this town must be big fans of old Hindi movies of 1950s and 1960s where the movie makers were quite fond of making their actors and audiences cry. :) Lead actor/actress in these movies would be feel happy and he/ she would sing a happy song. The film maker would then make him suffer and the same hero/ heroine would then be seen singing the sad version of the same song. :).

Here is just the kind of song that would illustrate my point. This picturisation from “Mehandi Lagi Mere Haath”(1962) shows Nanda looking happy and singing happy version of the title song. And a few songs and scenes later, she is forced to sing the sad version of this same title song. :)

So here is this title song from “Mehandi Lagi Mere Haath”(1962)- both the versions. Lata is the singer and the song is picturised on Nanda, who to my mind was “Nimmi Lite” or “Meena Kumari Lite” as far as essaying such roles were concerned. :)

Ram Rajya was a 1943 Bollywood mythological film, directed by Vijay Bhatt. Prem Adib and Shobhna Samarth were the lead roles as Rama And Sita. The supporting cast was Umakant, Badri Prasad, Ameerbai, Yashwant, Pandit, Madhusudan Pandey, Shantakumari, Aathavale, Ranjana etc. The first ever Indian movie that premiered at USA, It became one of the most popular movies of that early era of Hindi Cinema, and was the third highest grossing Indian film of 1943. The film gained significance, as for the title it used the term Ram Rajya (Rule of Rama), which Mahatma Gandhiji often used to define democratic-righteous rule during the Indian independence struggle. Incidently, it was the only film Gandhiji ever saw. Kanu Desai’s art direction was very much appreciated, equally by the Critics and masses.

Manna Dey made his singing debut with three solos for this Hindi film quite by accident. The producer of this film, Vijay Bhatt, and music director, Shankar Rao Vyas had approached Manna Dey’s uncle, K C Dey to sing for this film. K C Dey, who was an acclaimed composer himself, refused saying he would only sing to his own music. The visitors then asked Manna Dey to sing for the film instead. The other singers were Ameerbai Karnataki, Saraswati Rane and Shankar Rao himself. A very beautiful RaagaMaala was created for the film. String of Raagas namely Bahar, Kedar, Yaman Kalyan, Gaud Sarang, Khamaj, Kafi, Bageshri and again Bahar were used for composing this RaagaMaala. The Lyrics for which were written by Ramesh Gupta.

“Kachche Dhaage”(1973) was a Daaku movie produced and directed by Raj Khosla. His previous movie too was a Daaku drama, namely “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh”(1971). Attempt was made to retain the team of “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” but with some changes. Dharmendra and Asha Parekh were replaced by Kabir Bedi and Mausami Chatterji. Laxmi Chhaaya, the scene stealer in “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1973) was missing too.

Actors of “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh”(1971) who were retained in “Kachche Dhaage”(1973) included Vinod Khanna, Bhagwan, Purnima, Soni etc. The musical team too was retained.

Like “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh”(1971), “Kachche Dhaage”(1973) too had five songs in it. Both movies had four Lata solos and one duet. “Mera Gaaon Mera Desh” (1971) had one Rafi-Lata duet whereas “Kachche Dhaage”(1973) had one Lata-Hemlata duet in it.

Today (16 january 2015) is the birth anniversary of Kabir Bedi. As mentioned above, “Kachche Dhaaage” (1973) had no songs lip synced by any male actor including Kabir Bedi. Daakus do not sing songs was supposedly the motto of the Daakus of Raj Khosla movies. :)

No matter. Here is a Lata solo from the movie. The song, the title song of the movie, is lip syncedby Mausami Chatterji. Kabir Bedi, an also Vinod Khanna, appear in the picturisation, and both are in disguise, which means Kabir Bedi is wearing a turban and is wrapped around in a blanket. Vinod Khanna has paintd his face with black shoe polish and he too sports a turban, though no blanket. Bhagwan, enjoying the song does his jigs. He first stumbles against Vinod Khanna and then against Kabir Bedi and is suitably chastened after the experience.

Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

CHANDAN KA PALNA (1967) was produced under the banner of Arzoo Films by Zaibunnisa Usman Ali and Khairunnisa Ismail Memon and was directed by Ismail Memon. Dhamendra and Meena Kumari were in lead roles supported by Mehmood, Mumtaz, Durga Khote, Dhumal, Nazir Hussain, Bipin Gupta, Shabnam, Mukri etc. In a way, the film was the home production of Mehmood. Producers Zaibunnisa Usman Ali was the wife of Mehmood’s younger brother Usman Ali while Khairunnisa Ismail Memon was his younger sister. The director of the film, Ismail Memon was his brother-in-law. Mehmood’s first wife Madhu was the sister of Meena Kumari.

The film was planned at a time when Meena Kumari started living in Mehmood’s bungalow for sometime after her separation from Kamaal Amrohi. Usman Ali, the younger brother of Mehmood who also worked as his secretary and production controller took the opportunity of the availability of Meena Kumari for the lead role. Since Dharmendra used to spent much of his spare time in Mehmood’s bungalow in view of his ‘special’ friendship with Meena Kumari at that time, he agreed to work for the film by adjusting his dates for his other films. I had seen the film in a ‘fast forward’ mode on a website. So I will give here only the gist of the story which is on the predictable lines. Ajit (Dharmendra) and Shobha (Meena Kumari), after their brief courtship, get married. However, after years of marriage, they do not have a child. A medical examination reveals that Shobha would not be able to conceive. Her mother-in-law (Durga Khote) is shattered by this news as she had promised to her late husband that his family’s name would be perpetuated. Knowing her mother-in-law’s craving for a grandchild and humiliation she may have to face on being barren, Shobha decides to end her life so that Ajit could remarry to fulfill his mother’s wish. However, she is saved by a temple priest who gives her alternative options.

Overnight Shobha’s personality changes from a traditional wife to a fun loving woman with liberal outlook, drinking etc which is resented by her mother-in-law. Both of them almost come in to a physical fight at which moment, Ajit expels Shobha from the house. She shifts to her father’s house who is also perplexed by her changed behaviour and scolds her. She even signs the divorce papers without any hesitation. The fact is that Shobha does all these drama just to force Ajit to separate from her and remarry. Ultimately, Ajit is pressurised by her mother to get married to a new bride (Shabnam). Soon the new bride is expecting and the mother-in-law is very happy. However, after delivering a baby boy, the new wife dies. Now the time is ripe for the temple priest to reveal Ajit and his mother about Shobha’s sacrifice to make the family happy. Mother-in-law and Ajit repent and Shobha is welcomed back in the house. She is united with Ajit and his family and takes care of the child as her own.

From this story, one can make out that the roles of Mehmood as a Bengali classical music lover , Mumtaz as his love interest and Dhumal as his competitor in music are introduced mainly to give some respite to the audience from the heavy dose of melodramatic scenes in the movie. Despite the impressive star cast and good music, the film failed to do well at the box office.

The film had 7 songs of which 3 songs have been covered in the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song ‘o ganga maiya paar laga de mere’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar. The song is written by Anand Bakshi which is set to music by R D Burman. It is said that R D Burman composed the tune while sitting at Outram Ghat on the banks of Ganga at the outskirt of Calcutta (Kolkata). Coincidentally, when he returned to Bombay (Mumbai), Mehmood met him to say that he was looking for a song situation relating to river Ganga in the film. So he used the tune for this song.

This song is picturised on Meena Kumari on three different occasions in the film and different versions of the song get played on these occasions. The first one has two stanzas while the second and third have one stanza each of different verses. While the video links of the first and third versions are available, video link of second version is not available though in the movie this version is available. The audio link has three stanzas but the first stanza of the video link is not included.

Raju Bhartan, in his article, Remembering RD in 1997 had revealed that this song in raag Jogiya was a strong contender for Sur Singar Samsad’s award for the best classical film song of the year 1967 along with Madan Mohan’s ‘maine rang li aaj chunariya’ in raag Pilu from ‘Dulhan Ek Raat Ki’. However, Brijmohan who headed Sur Singar Samsad at that time, felt that awarding R D Burman would affect Sur Singar’s classical music reputation. The award for that year went to Madan Mohan. I can understand Brijmohan’s concern as at that time, R D Burman had created ripples in the Hindi film music with his new trendy westernised songs in ‘Teesri Manzil’ (1966) which became very popular. But such songs were anathema for classical music lovers. However, after 25 years, R D Burman did receive Special Award from Sur Singar Samsad for his contribution to music.

And thanks to our dejavu007 (another loan from a previous post of Sudhirji ;-)) so we were all activated when Shri. Dejavu007 wished Avey-of-Discard on whatsapp this morning. And promptly without batting an eyelid all of us copycats wished Avey-of-Discard a very Happy Birthday. (I am sure my fellow Atulwaasis won’t mind being called copycats as I was the lead copycat :) ) And the gracious Avey-of-Discard (how about adding a ji to this code name, just a passing thought) gave us the info that it was another regular atulite’s wedding anniversary; that of the NeatInsider (oh I seem to be borrowing heavily today, hope this whole thing is free or today Sudhirji will become a lot richer due to the Byaaj I will have to pay for my borrowings :) )

Oh and in between all the exchanges that we had on Whatsapp Avey-of-Discard (ji) gave us the reminder that it was the great Pran’s 95th birthday. Now there are no words to describe Pransaab. He seemed to be lucky for all the heroes he acted with— Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar or Raj Kapoor; then the next generation starting with Shammi Kapoor as also the set of actors who were heroes in our growing up years viz. Dharamendra, Amitabh, Jeetendra, Rishi Kapoor to name a few. In 2010 he was named on the list of CNN’s Top 25 Asian actors of all time. Before that in 2000 he was given the ‘Villain of the Millennium’ award by Stardust and the ‘Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 1997. To add to all this he was a Padma Bhushan. The last award he got was the Dadasaheb Phalke award in 2013. He was last seen in “Tere Mere Sapne” in 1996.

So to celebrate all the joyous occasions mentioned, here is a party song by Majrooh Sultanpuri set to music by sab ka dulaara R D Burman and sung by another dulaara Kishore Kumar. Now when I was going through YouTube to get a link for the song I made a discovery. That the voice for Pran in this song was Udit Narayan. All these years I was thinking that it was Kishoreda. Then on further research I found that Udit Narayan has been around since 1978 and he has shared the recording room with the Mohd. Rafi. And that this was Udit Narayan’s second song where in one version he gets to sing with the Lata Mangeshkar. For the version with the kids he is singing with a baby Preeti.

I missed the Mumbai Gangout as there were some fortunate developments at my workplace which were leading for an uncertain future for me.
So, one would be surprised to read ‘fortunate developments’ and that too leading to ‘an uncertain future.
Fortunate was it because the decision was taken by me to take a break from my current assignment and start a new journey which I would begin after searching and settling for.

No! No! Everything was not that sudden, it was a culmination of the incidents happening with me at the work place and the continuous thought process that I was going through since last 8/9 months.

The only difference this time (during the so far 30 years of my work-life) was that I was breaking without an alternate arrangement done and decided.

As I have already chosen a separate song for more on the above situation with a post too, we shall come back on the today’s song post first.

Many of our regulars wished that I should focus and do more posts and so did wish me.

Due to my inclination and passion for writing I too wish that I should do more posts and time to time there are many topics that I want to write upon or sometimes I would also like to simply share a song with an brief information accompanying it about the film and the film’s details.
And reading Atul ji’s posts and our other senior members’ posts those are having HFGK with them I too was eager to have a look at it and possess it.
As I knew that I would have a break of at least a month or more (starting from 2nd week of Feb), I planned to use this period by going through the HFGK and try to contribute some posts.

Searching on Google I landed on a wrong link (hfgk.8m.com) and the information on this link is having details about the ‘delux’ and ‘super delux’ editions of HFGK. I tried the contact numbers given there butthose numbers were not working. So I requested for information about them by sending SMS to Shri.Deshmukh Sir and Shri.Sudhir Sir. I got the details about them from Shri.Deshmukh Sir. Meanwhile Shri.Harminder Singh ji had responded to my mail. So the matter was clear and after initially thinking of getting the VOL – 3 (1951-60) and VOL-5 (1971-80) I decided to get the volume containing songs of the decade that I grew up with i.e. with the decade of 1971-80(Seventies).

After going through all the communication and formalities on 28th Jan, I eagerly began to look forward to my copy of HFGK. In my over enthusiasm I started checking with the local post office from 3rd February itself, but the parcel had not arrived by that time. So reluctantly I send a mail to Shri.Harminder Singh ji on 3rd Feb asking for the details and I received his reply very promptly. As he was out of station for a few days, so the parcel was not dispatched and he was going to dispatch it on the same day and it was expectedto reachme in 5-6 days time.

I checked with the Post Office again on the morning of 6th february as I was going away from my base station for two days that evening to my favorite place near Narmada-Rajpipla and to bring my elder daughter with me to enable her to enjoy a mini-vacation at home.

I kept asking my wife on phone during those two days to enquire if the parcel had reached. But it had not. We reached our base station on 12th morning which was my birthday!!

I thought of waiting for another day before sending a mail again seeking the details (docket no of parcel) from Shri.Harminder ji. Just as I was relaxing after lunch my phone rang … and this was a call from the local Post Office informing me that my parcel had arrived and I may go there and collect it.

I was more than happy to receive it on my birthday. (I love Books and that is the most favorite ‘gift’ I like to receive and also like to ‘gift’ others on special occasions. Secondly I would also like to mention here that since my childhood I am very much fascinated with the ‘Post-Office’ and have a special bond with it and may sometime do a post on this)

Now, to celebrate my acquisition of HFGK, I needed to discuss a song that had to be a ‘special’ one. I had earlier planned to do a song penned by Sahir Luhdhianvi as my first post to celebrate my first copy of HFGK. But, as I glanced through the first year of the decade i.e. 1971 I find this film mentioned in it and when I checked on the blog, I find that this song is yet to be discussed.

I was again surprised to note this (after ‘aaj ke is insaan ko ye kya ho gaya) because this was also a well known song sung by Kavi Pradeep and was frequently heard on radio and loud speakers during my growing up years. And this song figures in all compilations of cassettes/cds released on Kavi Pradeep.

Today I present this song sung by Kavi Pradeep which is also penned by him and composed by Chitragupt. The film is a 1971 film – ‘Kabhi Dhoop Kabhi Chhaaon’

It was a ‘Joy Films’ presentation and a social drama film Produced and Directed by Chandrakant. Music for this film was composed by Chitragupt and lyrics were by Prem Dhawan and Kavi Pradeep. Its star cast includes Dara Singh, Ameeta, Geetanjali, Jagdeep, Randhawa, Rammohan, Sapru, Renu, Mridula, Tiwari, Mona, Moppet Raja, Tiger Jogendra Singh, Julie, Mustafa, Kashmira, Anand Joshi, Gulab, Pahalawan, Deepak and Sulochana and many others. Qabil Amritsari wrote the story and dialogues for this film.

Today’s song is a title song of the movie. Though the video clip includes full lyrics, it appears to be shorter than the audio version.

Today we listen to this great voice, who left an indelible mark on Indians with his songs that covered important topics like partiotism, social causes, cultural heritage of the coutry etc.

While going through HFGK, I have found a few more songs (today’s song is one of them) that I plan to share in the days to come.

“Basant”(1942) was directed by Amiya Chakraborty for Bombay Talkies. The movie had Mumtaz Shanti, Ulhas, Pramila, Suresh, Mumtaz ali, Pithawala, Jagannath, Kanu Roy, Ganju, Baby Mumtaz (Madhubala) etc in it.

Nine songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the tenth and final song from the movie. This song is sung by Parul Ghosh and Arun Kumar Mukherji. P L Santoshi is the lyricist. Music composition is credited to Pannala Ghosh (though music was actually composed by Anil Biswas, his brother in law).

The song is picturised as a stage performance song. The male dancer lip syncing in Arun Kumar Mukherji’s voice is Mumtaz Ali. I am unable to identify the lady lip syncing in Parul Ghosh’s voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to help us identify her.

“Pyaar Kiya Jaa”(1966) was directed by Sridhar for Chitralaya. The movie had Kishore Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Kalpana Mohan, Rajashree.T(south->Introducing), Mehmood, Mumtaz, Om Prakash, Shivraj, Chaman Puri, V.D.Puranik, Veena Kumari, N.S,Bedi, Shyamlal etc in it.

Four songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. HEre is the fifth song from “Pyaar Kiye Jaa”(1966). The song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Rajinder Krishan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised on Kishore Kumar (in disguise) and Kalpana (unable to see through the disguise and therefore wary of him). Towards the end of the song, Kishore Kumar vannishes (apparently fallen through cliffs) and then reappears, this time without his disguise and this delights Kalpana no end.

Whenever I came across some interesting songs/links during my searches, I copy them and save them in my ‘draft folder’, so that it can be taken up and shared whenever suitable.

The link for this –today’s song- was saved by me in August’2013 and it was lying there since then.

By the standards of our blog the films of 70s fall in ‘recent films’ category so I thought that this could always be taken up later. Also I had not heard about this film or its song earlier. Thereafter I forget about this song.

Later on in November 2014, when I shared this song ‘bachche mein hai bhagwaan’ from the film ‘Nanha Farishta-1969’ I noted that Atul ji, while presenting this song mentioned that the ‘title song’ of this film had become quite popular then.

I had already shared one more song from ‘Nanha Farishta’ and had gone through the list of its other songs. So I was sure that there was no such title song in this movie.

But when I came across this film’s information in HFGK I realized that Atul ji must be talking of this title song from ‘Nanhaa Shikaari’

‘Nanhaa Shikaari – 1973’ was a social film Directed by R.L.Desai for Mukherji Brothers, Bombay. As per HFGK Vol. V it was passed by censor board on 16.04.1973.

The film had Dev Mukherji, Bunty, Tanuja,Jairaj,Ram Avtar, Manik Dutt,Narinder Choudhary, B.K.Mukherji, Mahfuj, Sajan, Guru, Darshan, Pradeep Dasgupta, Ramesh Kumar, Prem Roop, Shera (the Dog), Colin (the Dog), and Laxmichhaya and Iftikhar in special appearance.

This film had total Seven songs in it. S.H.Bihari wrote two of the songs (including four parts of this ‘one’ song – Nanhaa Shikaari).

Yogesh and Gauhar Kanpuri had one song each.

Songs of this film were composed by Bappi Lahiri while the background music was composed by Mohammad Shafi.

I could find only ‘two’ parts of this song and I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie as well as this song as possible.

This is the first song sung by the ‘Voice of Seventies-Kishore Kumar’ in this series and there are surely many more to follow…

“Bandhe Haath”(1973) was produced by O P Ralhan and directed by O P Goyle. The movie had Amitabh Bachchan, Mumtaz, Ajit, Anjana Mumtaz, Kumud Chugani, Ram Mohan, Sardar Akhtar, O.P.Ralhan, Madan Puri, Ranjeet, Gajanan Jagirdar, Asit Sen, Tuntun, Baldev Mehta, Pinchoo Kapoor, Kamal Deep, Moolchand, Sikandar, Gaurang, Maqbool, Usha Amershi, Vanita Thakur etc in it.

Here is the first song from “Bandhe Haath”(1973) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

The picturisation shows that it is a stage song. Amitabh Bachchan stands behind the microphone on stage and sings this song. The occasion is a women’s organisation function. Kumud Chugani (who looks so much like Twinkle Khanna) is seated on the stage alongwith some other dignitaries. The hall on such occasions is always houseful, and this song is no exception. Actors playing significant roles in the movie always sit on the front row. Here we find Ranjeet seated on the front row and whispering conspiratorially to one of his fellow conspirer.

Mumtaz is also visible temporarity in the picturisation when Amitabh Bachchan imagines himself to be with her before he is quickly brought back to reality.
