“Miyaan Biwi Raazi”(1960) was directed by Jyoti Swaroop for Anupam Chitra, Bombay. The movie had Shrikant Gaurav, Kamini Kadam, Mehmood, Seema Deo, Manorama, David Abraham, Sabita Chatterjee, Raja Gosavi, Daisy Irani, Niranjan Sharma, Shaila Vaz etc in it.

Six songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the seventh and final song from the movie. This song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and Asha Bhonsle. Shailendra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S D Burman.

The song is picturised on three pairs of actors. I am only able to identify Mehmood and Seema Deo. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify the others visible in the picturisation.

With this song, which is the title song of the movie, “Miyaan Biwi Raazi”(1960) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Readers of this blog might now be familiar with a certain pattern of posts on this blog.

While there are posts which focus largely on the song, or the film, or even personal anecdotes, one common pattern is the celebration of anniversaries and milestones, in a post.

The anniversaries are our way of paying tribute to the artiste concerned. Whoever the artiste, whether a composer or lyricist or actor, whatever his level of fame in the industry, we try to remember and honour him on his birth or death anniversary.

The milestones are often in the form of numerical achievements. For example, a century milestone for the blog or an artiste. Or a “1000”milestone. Of late, now that we’ve clocked 124 century milestones, the weight of celebration has shifted for some, from the “100” to the “1000” landmark.

Then there is an occasion that can be considered both an anniversary and a milestone. The birthday of this blog. We celebrate it every year on the 19th of July (the date of the very first song posted here, in 2008). This is also however a milestone because, it is a marker of yet another year completed by the blog. A testimony to its continued health. Every blog anniversary means another 1000-2000 songs added to the blog.

Today we celebrate a different sort of milestone for the blog. One that comes around only once in 1000 days.

Today happens to be the 3000th day of this blog!

I happen to have the honour of writing about this. Possibly because I happened to be witness to the very first of those 3000 days. And now witness to the 3000th.

It fills me with a great deal of happiness to see how the blog has developed from that first day, to today.

I’ve written about this in the past, but I never tire of repeating it (even if some of you might be tired of reading it. :-)). But on such an occasion, I cannot but help reflecting on the blog journey, so please bear with me.

This blog was started on 19th July 2008. But well before it was started, in May-June 2005, Atul and I got to know each other on a cricket forum. We immediately clicked, seeing as we were both of the same generation, having similar memories of those 70s matches and players. We’d discuss Vishwanath (Atul’s favourite batsman), Kallicharran, cricket commentators etc.

The cricket forum had sections allowing for non-cricket discussions too. We’d often discuss news and do masti. We’d also discuss songs.

Atul and I discovered that, apart from cricket, we had a common passion for old Hindi film songs. We started a weekly series of “geetmala” threads on the cricket forum, each week discussing a certain topic. I remember Atul discussing “train” songs one week, I discussed “songs that uplift my mood” one week, and so on. There were a few others on the forum who were also active participants. One of them was Shalini – whose comments can be seen in the early posts of this blog.

During that period, blogging as a social media tool was catching on. Atul, ever keen to experiment, started a blog of his own. You can find it on his blogroll on this blog. The earliest post on it that I could locate now is dated 7th June, 2008. http://squarecutsblog.blogspot.in/2008/06/c-ramchandra-what-music-director.html

I seem to remember a second blog that Atul started around that time.

And then, came this blog “Atul –song-a-day” on 19th July 2008. The other two blogs gradually faded away once Atul began concentrating on this song blog.

On the cricket forum, Atul was well-known for his one-liners. I would, even there, write long posts and comments. Atul would occasionally do that too (like some of his posts here) – but his one-liners could summarise a situation better than anyone could. Long before Twitter made you think in 140 characters, Atul had already mastered the art.🙂 I coined the term “Atulism” to refer to his style of humour.🙂

Anyway, Atul started this blog – and announced it on the cricket forum straightaway.

Naturally, I immediately checked it out.🙂 A combination of songs and Atulisms (hopefully) – too hard to resist. 🙂

The song, as many here now know, was “mile na phool to kaanton se dosti kar li”.

Atul has said many times that he never ever imagined the blog would grow the way it has.

It was meant to be a one-song-a-day blog. That one song was meant to be Atul’s choice.

But he didn’t reckon with his audience and their demands. More specifically, the demands of a greedy humumr guy.

I was so thrilled to see this new blog and listen to the songs posted, that I wanted to see more and more songs on it. Songs of MY choice. And not just one or two, but tens of them.

I began sending Atul “farmaishes”. Not one or two (as happens on Vividh Bharti), but, quite shamelessly, lists of 10-11 songs.

Lalitha, another early visitor to the blog, caught on. She made me feel slightly less guilty when she began sending her farmaishes regularly too.

So now poor Atul, who had started with ONE song a day of HIS choice, ended up facing demands of many songs of other people’s choices.

He gamely tried to satisfy them. But, at the rate of one song a day, supply was never going to be anywhere close to meeting the demand. Supply just had to be ramped up.

And that’s what happened. Although the blog is still called one-song-a-day, we are now used to multiple songs a day.

Those were the very early days.

As we know, there are lovers of Hindi film music around the world. Soon, this blog began getting hits from across the globe. We could see more people commenting on the songs – always a good sign. Some of these commenters then became contributors. Whether helping out with lyrics, or writing posts themselves.

So what started as a one-man show became a community movement.

The knowledge of some of the commenters/contributors is just staggering. The content that now began making its way on the blog – much of it not found anywhere else online – enriched the blog manifold, making it an invaluable repository and archive for record.

So suddenly, the blog went to a totally different level altogether.

I believe one of the most important aspects of the blog is its frequency of updates. Every single day (except for the very rare one), there is at least one song posted. So readers are guaranteed something new everyday.

Many in fact check out this blog first thing everyday to see what’s new. How many blogs can claim this frequency of daily update (that too multiple times a day now)?

Then of course, there’s the reliability factor. Lyrics and other information (for tags) are never compromised on. Atul makes it a point to provide as accurate lyrics as possible. Even when lyrics are provided by other contributors, he checks them thoroughly and makes necessary corrections before posting them. That’s how high he keeps the standard of the blog.

There’s also the ad aspect. This blog is a labour of love. So although there are a few ads, they are very unobtrusive and don’t interfere with the reader’s viewing experience, unlike many other sites out there.

Then there’s also the “regulars” factor. Like I’ve said before, for some, this blog is like the “nukkad ke chai ki dukaan” which is an “adda” for them to hang out at. They’re not only regular visitors, they’ve also forged friendships here. As commenters or posters, they’ve come together thanks to the blog, and by now have become thick friends. Many of them have also met each other in real life.

Over the years, Atul has added several features, each of them enriching the blog. The various statistics, the anniversary dates are extremely popular additions. I use them almost everytime I log onto the blog.

Then there have been other developments too. Atulites (as we call the blog regulars) have added their own masala to enhance the blog. Thus we have the YIPPEE idea and project, started by Pradeep. Blog regulars are constantly trying to find ways to enrich content on the blog. This is because they now feel a special sense of belonging towards the blog. It is now part of their daily life.
They are constantly buzzing about the blog, wherever in the world they may be. There are whatsapp groups of these members, where the blog is a common discussion point.

So as we celebrate the 3000th day of this blog, I remember not just the beginning but also the journey with a lot of nostalgia and fondness. It might have started as a one-man show but today it is a collaborative effort, where everyone is happy to pitch in, as and when required, to help in whatever way he or she can.

THIS is true teamwork – and I am happy, and humbled, to be a cog in this wheel.

In this spirit, today’s song is about a journey and team work.

By the standards of this blog, it is of rather recent vintage. But I am very happy to have the opportunity to post it here, considering it is from one of my favourite films of the last 25 years.

The song is “yunh ki kat jaayega safar saath chalne se” from the fun film “Hum Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke”. It is just perfect for this occasion, as it talks about collaboration and how it makes a journey so much easier when everyone works together to make something happen.

I will not discuss the song or the movie anymore. All I will say is, I have seen the movie several times on TV. It is a TV favourite for all generations. Everytime I see it’s coming on TV, I think “ok, I’ll just watch it for 5-10 minutes”. And I end up sitting through the whole movie. It is just so much fun.

So let’s all celebrate this 3000th day of this blog.

Congratulations to Atul and everyone on this journey.

By the way, the lyrics have been prepared by Avinashji. We split the work between us – he said he’d take care of the lyrics, if I took care of the write-up. And as usual, he has done a thorough job. Thanks, Avinashji.

I’m sure you will all enjoy this wonderfully upbeat song.

Clearly the adage “once bitten, twice shy” doesn’t apply to Atulites.

At least not to Batulites (Bengaluru-based Atulites).

Otherwise there’s no reason they’d ask me to post a write-up on the blog, describing the recent gangout event. The last time I wrote a post on a Bengaluru gangout, it was more than six months after the event! By then, I’d forgotten some details – and possibly many had lost interest.🙂

Or maybe they’re just forgiving – and giving me a second chance here.

Anyway, this time I hope not to let them down. Also, I’m going to try to complete this post in one shot (unlike the last time).

Readers of recent posts will be aware that Avinash Scrapwala and his wife arrived in Bengaluru on the 1st of October 2016 to spend a few days in the city.

For Batulites, ever happy to meet up, this was reason enough to try to organize a gangout event, with Avinashji and his wife as chief guests.

After some discussion on the Batulite whatsapp group, the date picked was Sunday, 2nd October 2016.

Except for Aparna (whose attendance was tentative), the other Bengalureans confirmed their availability. We were hoping that Aparna would also be able to make it for that date. As it turned out, she had a function to attend on that date and couldn’t make it.

So finally the gangout attendees were Avinashji and his wife, Shenoyji and his wife, Srinivas Gantiji and his wife, Gajendraji, Peevisie’s Mom and myself.

I must say it was nice to have Satulites (spouse of Atulites, not to be confused with satellites :- ) ) also present. As we joked during the sesson, this was our way of brainwashing them and trying to bring them into the fold (in other words, converting Satulites into Atulites). Also, it made Atulites feel less guilty when they spent hours staring at the blog on screen.🙂

To be fair to them though, all of them are already interested in music and quite knowledgeable too. So, whether converted or not, they seemed to enjoy the gangout as much as the rest of us.

Now, about the venue.

The gangouts of 2014 and 2015 had happened at my place. This time too, that was the original plan. Then, a few days before the meet, I got a call from Peevisie’s Mom to discuss about the event.

While discussing, we realized that, Gajendraji’s place in East Bengaluru would be more convenient for the event than my place in South Bengaluru. For one, with Srinivas Ganti also moving to East Bengaluru recently, East ka “palaDa bhaari ho gaya”. I was the only attendee (and Avinashji + wife, of course) who was not from East Bengaluru.

Also, as Peevisie’s Mom told me rather frankly “Aap ke jagah pe internet ka problem bhi hota hai na”. I must admit that in previous events, this had been a bother. And Murphy’s Law was at its best. While internet did work, it was iffy – and distracted us from the gangout itself. When we meet, we want full attention on the event and not have to worry about infra issues.

Gajendraji, on the other hand, has things much more under control. I’d been to his place when Arunji was in town – and his setup is much more reliable. Not only does he have more reliable connectivity, he is also skilled and experienced in connecting devices, streaming live videos and things like that. We knew we had a better chance of fully concentrating on the event.

So we contacted Gajendraji and he was only too happy to host the event.

The Batulite whatsapp group was duly informed – and now planning for the event began in right earnest.

Srinivasji offered to host a quiz programme, Gajendraji also had a quiz in mind. Avinashji suggested a group autograph collage. There was a proposal to watch a film together – after some discussion, we decided it would be Priyatama (1977). I suggested we could all do some singing – even if it was only a few lines (finally this didn’t happen – maybe next time!).

The time was set at 10.00 am. Venue: Gajendraji’s Place.

And so, the day dawned. 2nd October. Gandhi Jayanti. Sunday.

That morning, Avinashji and I went for a morning walk. We were walking towards the usual park I go to, but there was a road block. So we went off on a different route – and we ended up going to the lake park near my house. One that I’ve passed many times but never visited.🙂 The things that you do when you go off your beaten track routine!

Anyway, that was a digression.

The idea was to get ready by 9.00 and take a Uber cab, so as to get to Gajendraji’s place by 10.00. After having breakfast, and a bit of delay, it was almost 9.30 when we left home. But luckily there wasn’t much traffic on the road, so we managed to get to Gajendraji’s area a little after 10.00.

Even as we were entering his complex, we noticed Srinivasji and his wife walking on the road. We’d never met them before but I recognized Srinivasji from his Facebook pictures. So we paid off the cab and walked the few metres further to Gajendraji’s place together.

As usual, Gajendraji was very warm and welcoming. This was the fourth time I was meeting him – and everytime I’ve met him, I’ve always got the same sense of warmth and comfort. One immediately feels comfortable in his presence.

The others had not arrived yet. Peevisie’s Mom had already told us she’d be a little late, as she had some social obligations to first take care of.

While we were chatting and introducing each other, Shenoyji and his wife arrived. So, more introductions. We passed around the sheet for the gangout group autographs.

In the meantime, Peevisie’s Mom also arrived. She’d had a hectic morning, having woken up at 4.00 a.m (and slept the previous night at 12:00 midnight). She arrived with a cake in tow – this was promptly cut and consumed, but not before Gajendraji managed to capture it on video. The cake had “ASAD – Atul Song A Day 2016” on it – and looked (and tasted) lovely. Thank you, Peevisie’s Mom, for this thoughtful addition to the event.

Since we now had full attendance (Aparna having unfortunately confirmed that she wouldn’t be able to make it), we decided to get the activities started.

First up, Srinivasji and his Uttar Dakshin quiz.

This was as follows. He would play part of a South Indian song (audio) on the computer. We would need to guess the mukhda of the Hindi version of that song. He would start with the antara – if we could crack it with this itself, 2 points. If we cracked it only after hearing the mukhda, then 1 point.

We were divided into two groups, based on how we happened to be sitting at that time. Avinashji, his wife and I were in one group. Shenoyji, his wife and Peevisie’s Mom were in the other group.
Srinivasji’s wife had been part of the quiz creation/approval team, so she wasn’t part of any team. Gajendraji also didn’t belong to a team – he was the cameraman.

Early on, it became apparent that it wasn’t exactly going to be a close contest. Shenoyji and Peevisie’s Mom were just too strong for us. Some of the songs suffered from TOT syndrome (term Gajendraji came up with, meaning tip-of-tongue syndrome :-)). Some others were just tough – and one we should have really got, we missed. (Nis din, nis din, from Annadaata).

Anyway, the final results were something like 8-6 or 9-7 (which clearly flattered us, considering they were way better). But the good thing was, the quiz was of a pretty decent standard – the odd easy song but most of them needed some effort. Credit to Srinivasji and his wife for this.

The entire quiz was captured by Gajendraji on video.

Then, we moved on to Gajendraji’s quiz.

This was more relaxed – only because there were no points.🙂 Or maybe there were, but after some time, nobody seemed to keep track anymore.🙂 That saved me and my team some humiliation.🙂

This quiz was in the format of “guess the singer”. Gajendraji would play a song – and we had to guess the singer. This being Gajendraji, these weren’t Rafisaab, Kishore songs. We were exposed to (and got exposed too) a whole lot of songs, mainly from the 1930s/40s, sung by various singers, from Juthika Roy to Noorjehan to Ameerbai Karnataki to Zohrabai Ambalewali to Premlata to Suraiya to Rajkumari to Shanta Apte to early Asha Bhosle to Mubarak Begum to Meena Kapoor and many more. Not to be outdone, the male singers too were varied, from GM Durrani to Anil Biswas to Khan Mastana to Mukesh. Am sure Arunji would have had a field day 🙂 but most of us were just guessing.

It was a lot of fun – and educational too. I think some of the songs were non-film songs, and many of them possibly not even on the internet. I quite enjoyed listening to many of them, even if I had no clue who the singer was. I would request Gajendraji to upload these songs to youtube if he doesn’t mind. That way, they can be enjoyed by a broader audience – and can make their way to our blog too.

After this session (at the end of which my brain would not have been able to distinguish between Rafisaab and Lata anymore :-)) , it was time for a welcome break. In other words, lunch.

Packed lunch was arranged from Rajdhani restaurant – and all of us went about doing justice to the food.

After lunch, it was time for the film show. Priyatama (1977). At this point, Srinivasji and his wife had to leave, so we said goodbye to them. This was the first time I was meeting them (I think first time for all of us, except Gajendraji?) – it was a pleasure. Looking forward to meeting them at future gangouts too.
The rest of us continued – and the film got underway. I had last seen Priyatama in the late 70s. While I broadly remembered the theme, I’d forgotten the details. I only remembered the songs “koi roko na” and “main jo kahoon haan to haan”. Gajendraji had not seen the film before. Peevisie’s Mom had But it was good for all of us to see it together.

Of course, watching a full film requires a lot of time. We’d watched quite a bit when we decided it was time to call it a day. Peevisie’s Mom had had a hectic morning and was understandably somewhat tired – but she still wanted us to visit her place (which wasn’t too far off) before leaving. So all of us (Avinashji, wife, Shenoyji, wife, Gajendraji and myself) went to her place. We spent about 15-20 min there, met Peevisie’s Dad (also a Satulite?), before it was time to say goodbye to all. All good things have to come to an end – and our gangout was no different.

And this, friends, is the story of our 2nd October 2016 gangout at Bengaluru.

As Avinashji, his wife and I made our way back home by cab, I felt much energized after the event. Music, and discussions on music, anyway tend to energise me – but it is much more so after having an enjoyable time with friends. Time seems to fly on such occasions – but that’s how it goes. I am just glad we managed to have the event, that too, with Avinashji and his wife gracing it.

Now to the song for today.

When music lovers get together, that too Atulites, it is but natural that there will be memories. Of songs, of the blog, of artistes. A gangout is a natural place for this to happen – and our gangout was no different.

So the song for today is also about memories. It is a song from the 1970s – lyrics provided by Avinashji (as usual, with a lot of diligence).

Here is “Yaadon ki baaraat nikli hai aaj, dil ke dwaare” from the film Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973). The film was a pretty big hit – all the songs were hits too. I think “chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko” was one of the most popular songs of the 70s. RD Burman’s star was already on the rise – this film certainly did its share in enhancing his popularity.

Vijay Arora became a known face. Ajit’s growing reputation as a villain got a big boost. Dharam’s reputation as a bankable hero also rose – he successfully survived Rajesh Khanna’s superstardom. One might say, he even thrived – considering the string of hits he had in the early 70s. Zeenat Aman also got a boost in her career with this film. Tariq somehow didn’t make it big despite this film – and Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin a few years later.

Hope you enjoy this post and this song.

Phew! I managed to finish this post in one sitting! Yippeee!!! 🙂

Today (16 october 2016) is the birthday of Hema Malini, MP from Mathura.

But we will not go into her political career here. That is not of any particular interest to this blog. What we are interested in here is music and the film industry – and that is what we will focus on.

If I were a Britisher, I would probably say “It is fair to say that Hema Malini had a fairly successful career as a leading actor of her time, with a not insignifant number of successful films. ”

That would be typical British understatement. And anybody who’s familiar with the British style of speech, will translate this into “She must have had a phenomenally successful career, with a very large number of hits.”🙂

And that would be a pretty accurate assessment of Hema Malini’s career. She was the reigning queen of her time, with others playing catch-up.

Being a 70s kid, I had the privilege of following Hema Malini’s career first hand right through that decade. She made her debut in the late 60s (so that was slightly before my time) but I do remember watching her early movies (Sapnon Ka Saudagar, Aansoo Aur Muskaan, Tum Haseen Main Jawaan, Abhinetri, Johny Mera Naam, Andaaz) when I was very young.

With the arrival of the 70s decade, Hema Malini seemed to come into her own. That was the period when Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh and Mumtaz were probably the top heroines. But Hema Malini, who was a newbie compared to these ladies, was soon right up there with all of them as a much-in-demand heroine.

And then, while these heroines’ careers as leading women gradually ended, Hema’s just took off. She dominated the 70s decade like none other.

In fact, one can say that, while the 70s decade was split between Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan in superstardom for the male lead, it was singularly dominated by Hema Malini, for the female lead.

This is no disrespect to the other heroines of the time. They were also popular – but Hema’s popularity easily surpassed all of them.

Not for nothing did we have dialogues like “apne aap ko Hema Malini samajh rahi hai kya?”

Not for nothing was she called “Dream Girl” – and even had a film by this name in which she played the female lead.

Not for nothing were her co-stars like Jeetendra and Sanjeev Kumar, not to mention Dharmendra, interested in wooing her.

Through all this, Hema Malini maintained a professionalism – probably also under the watchful eye of her mother, Jaya Chakravarty.

The successes kept coming. There were many – I am not going to list them here, except mention the odd film.

Johny Mera Naam (1970). An early film in her career – and a MASSIVE hit. This kicked off the Dev Anand – Hema Malini partnership. They acted in quite a few films thereafter, never quite with the success of Johny Mera Naam. Hema did admit later that Dev Anand was one of her favourite directors.

Lal Patthar (1971). Early film for Hema, but one in which her performance could be said to be every bit as impressive as the highly-rated Raj Kumar. One could hardly think this is somebody just starting out on her career.

Andaaz (1971). Hema played the role of a mother. Again, rather uncharacteristic for someone so early in her career. But clearly Ramesh Sippy had confidence in her, even then.

Seeta Aur Geeta (1972). Another Ramesh Sippy film, Hema Malini was the standout in this delightful “separated twins” story (remade as Chaal Baaz later). She won the Filmfare Award for this film – and deservedly so.

Sholay (1975). Again, a Ramesh Sippy film. Amongst the many fond memories of this film are the scenes involving Hema Malini. Who can forget Basanti? In fact, she has often said that even today, when she travels to places, she meets people who refer to her as Basanti. She was just fabulous in Sholay.

Kinara (1977). A Gulzar film. Hema Malini was by then a superstar, but many of her films had been “typical” films of the time. Often masala, with a lot of running around trees, song and dance and typical dhishum-dhishum. This was a different film – one in which Hema got a chance to dispay acting depth. Gulzar had earlier worked with Hema in Khushboo (1975) – another lovely film, with a good storyline.

Meera (1979). Another Gulzar film, which centred around the female protagonist (Meera) played by Hema. I remember reading about this film when it was being made. Hema was very keen on this role.

Razia Sultan (1983). Now this is a film I haven’t seen (and I think it didn’t do well), but again she had the female protagonist role. It’s a film I’d like to see.

Ek Chaadar Maili Si (1986). Hema was just outstanding in this film – again a role with maturity and depth.

Rihaee (1988). A powerful film that talks about women and their experiences in the village, when left behind by their husbands who’ve gone to the city for work. It’s a bold film – and Hema Malini’s performance (20 years after Sapnon Ka Saudagar, her first film as lead heroine) is still pretty spot on.

She’s acted in films after that too – more recently in character roles, like opposite Amitabh Bachchan in the hit film Baghbaan (2003). I must admit I’ve not seen many of these “recent” films.

I’ve listed only a few films here. Other than these, there were plenty of films which were not only very successful, but where she played a big part in the film’s success. She was also an accomplished Bharat Natyam dancer – and in several of her films, she had a chance to display her dancing skills.

I will admit one thing though. For all her superstar success in the 70s, Hema was NOT my favourite heroine of the time. That was possibly partly because she was the favourite for many – and I wanted to be the rebel. I would support a Moushumi or a Sulakshana or a Vidya Sinha, but not Hema – just to be “hatke”.🙂 Besides, her accent was always a bit of a dampener for me, though I must give her credit for getting to the top, despite it.

Now to the song for today.

I’ve picked a song from one of Hema’s early films. A song that I vividly remember from my childhood – it was a popular song in its time. A pretty catchy tune – one that I used to sing a lot.🙂 I was quite surprised this song hasn’t been posted yet.

But beyond these reasons, a reason to post this is that the song is composed by Shankar Jaikishen. Yesterday (15th October) was the birth anniversary of Shankar. I did not post a separate song on this occasion, so I am using this song to pay tribute to this maestro too.

The song is “aap ko pehle bhi kahin dekha hai” from Tum Haseen Main Jawan (1970). Those who like catchy tunes will like this one. Typical Shankar Jaikishen of the time. They could do classical tunes – and they could do foot-tapping ones too. This one belongs in the latter category. But don’t miss the interludes – they have a classical bend to them! So this song has both.🙂

Hope you like it. I believe this was also the film where Hema and Dharam acted together for the first time – and there was a sort of initial attraction between them.

And wish you a very happy birthday and many happy returns of the day, Hemaji.

SUHAAG (1940) was produced under the banner of CIRCO Productions and it was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The star cast included M Kumar, Bibbo, Mazhar Khan, Ashalata, S Nazir, Ghulam Rasool, P R Joshi, Mehdi Raza etc. The story of the film as culled out from a review which appeared in July 1940 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine is as under:

Dhanji Bhagat is a professional thief who works on the behest of Keshav Sheth (Mazhar Khan), a rich moneylender of the village. During the day time, he camouflages his notorious activity in the guise of a street musician in which his daughter Raju (Bibbo) is a street dancer.

At the end of one of the street dance shows, Raju reminds her father of his promise to present her silver bells. Keshav Sheth gives a hint to Dhanji to break open a jewellery shop to get not only the silver bells but also some other jewelleries. Dhanji commits a theft but soon discovers a policeman watching him stealing from the shop. He kills the policeman. Dhanji along with some more suspects are arrested as nobody has seen him killing the policeman. Keshav, through his influence, rescues Dhanji from subjecting him the third degree methods used by the police. His freedom is short lived as soon, Dhanji dies a natural death.

The death of Dhanji brings his daughter Raju to Keshav for borrowing some money for the funeral of her father which Keshav refuses. Ramesh (M Kumar), Keshav’s son does not like his father’s attitude towards Raju. Ramesh reaches at the funeral of Dhanji. A love blossoms between Raju and Ramesh.

Obviously, Keshav does not like his son to get married to a beggar girl like Raju. However, Ramesh is prevailed upon changing his mind and agrees to marry Kamla (Ashalata). On the wedding night, Ramesh is not to be seen as he runs out of the house to reach Raju. What Ramesh finds in Raju’s house is his father, Keshav trying to force on Raju. A shuffle ensues between Ramesh and Keshav in which Keshav is accidentally killed.

Just to save Ramesh from the charge of murder, Raju takes the crime on her and goes to jail for 3 years. During these three years, Ramesh suffers from some illness continuously. His wife, Kamla suddenly realises that Raju, is the cure for the life of Ramesh. After the release of Raju, the triangle gets resolved by Kamla proposing Ramesh to bring Raju to the house as his second wife.

I have read many reviews of the films in ‘Filmindia’ magazines from 1937 to 1949 (except films released in 1944 and 1947 for which magazine issues are not available) but this is the first review in which a favourable review of the film by The Times of India (TOI) is quoted and then rebutted by the review in ‘Filmindia’. TOI rates the film as ‘distinguishes in every detail, particularly in respect of acting, music and direction which are of the highest standard’. But ‘Filmindia’ is not impressed with the film. It says that ‘the film is unique in being disappointing in every respect. It has neither a good story, nor a good music, nor good acting, nor good direction, not even good photography and sound’.

I have not seen the film as it is not available to view in any format. All I can judge now is its music. Out of 10 songs in the film, 2 songs are available – one on YT and one in mp3 format. More songs may be available with the record collectors. I have listened to both these songs and I can say that there is not much strength in the review of ‘Filmindia’ in so far as the music of the film is concerned. I liked both the songs. The songs were written by Pandit Indra and Kareem and were set to music by Timir Baran.

I am presenting the first song from the film to appear in the Blog. The song is ‘aaj suhaag ki raat, sej meri ban gayi phoolwaari’ sung by Rajkumari Dubey. The song is written by Pandit Indra. From the story of the film set out above, it can be easily guessed that the song may have been picturised on Ashalata on their wedding night.

Enjoy the excellent singing by Rajkumari Dubey on beautifully woven lyrics with a semi-classical composition by Timir Baran.

With this song, the film ‘Suhaag’ (1940) makes its debut in the Blog.

Hullo to all in Atuldom

A very belated Happy Diwali to all those who I missed to wish. Hope it was sweet and well lit for all. We are into the new Samvat and here is the first birthday.

We all know this birthday boy as a winner of 14 filmfare awards. He has a significant fan following in Asia and among the Indian Diasporas across the globe. He is one who dared to pick villainous roles early on in his career –something like say Vinod Khanna or Shatrughan Sinha of the previous generation. He is the pet of the film maker who is considered the king of romantic films in the current era. His paternal grandfather was a Pathan and the family moved to India post 1948. He grew up in Delhi and was educated from schools and colleges there but his road to fame and fortune began when he joined the Theatre Action Group and was mentored by Barry John. Oh yes I am speaking of Badshah alias Raj (naam toh suna hoga?) alias Rahul alias Shahrukh Kkkkhan –like the way he said KKKKiran in one of his early movies.

On the occasion of Shahrukh Khan’s 51st birthday let us have a song from the first movie he signed. The song showcases the young “Badshah’s” beautifully emoting eyes. It shows the promise of things that were in store for the public. It is not a small achievement for a person without any filmy background to make it big in the industry and stay at the top; something similar to what his predecessors Dilip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan did. (Though all have their individual styles they all claim to be a fan of the Dilip Kumar).

He was first appreciated in TV serials. He was offered Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman by Aziz Mirza who directed him in “Circus” almost at the same time as Hema Malini who cast him in her multi starrer for her directorial debut “Dil Aashna Hai”. He was cast opposite Divya Bharati who was also his co-star in his first released movie- Deewaana.

“Dil Aashna Hai” (1992) means that “the heart knows the truth”. I think they had used this as a tag line for the movie.

The movie had a very straight forward storyline that a rich man’s son Shahrukh Khan falls in love with a dancer in his dad’s hotel which his dad doesn’t appreciate. To complicate matters the girl’s origins are doubtful. She has been raised by a courtesan in a brothel. As if that was not enough the courtesan on her death bed gives the girl a brief about her history- she has been adopted by the courtesan from a Dai – nanny (Farida Jalal). The Dai tells her about three friends who ended up being naughty with their boyfriends and in due course this girl was born. (The movie doesn’t mention who is the mother for quite some time.) But if that was divulged early how will we have complications, correct? So then the young couple (Shahrukh Khan- Divya Bharti) goes about looking for the real mother. That then is the synopsis of the movie which had Amrita Singh- Jeetendra, Dimple Kapadia- Mithun Chakravarty, Sonu Walia- Naseer Abdullah ( he was a model before this movie), with Kabir Bedi.

The songs for the movie were penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music was by Anand Milind. This song is in the voices of Sadhana Sargam and Suresh Wadkar.

Atul’s note-This song also has a female solo version sung by Sadhana Sargam and picturised as a background song which is used to give us an idea about the identity of the mother of Divya Bharti.🙂

#the Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #
————————————————————
# Bhoole-Bisre Geet # 47 # Kishore Kumar (his many moods)
————————————————————————–

I have no idea when it was for the first time that I heard this song under discussion. I may have listened to it for the first time on radio many years ago.

I have never watched this movie ‘Jaane Anjaane-1971’. The song that I associate this movie with is not this title song, but other better known songs viz. ‘teri neeli aankhon ke’ and later ‘chham chham baaje re payaliya’. I became familiar with these songs when when I got a compilation of songs recorded in 1987-98 that I labelled as ‘classical songs from Hindi movies’.

This song of “Jaane Anjaane”(1971) was one of the first songs that I shared in this blog. That was as far back as on 25.11.2012. I like this song very much. This is the only song sung by Kishore Kumar in this movie. I find the song as well as Kishore Kumar’s voice in this song very touching.

It was much later that I came to know about the details of this movie and then I began to wonder how and on whom this song was picturised in this Shammi Kapoor starrer movie. At that time in 2012 I could only find the audio of this song. But now the movie and this song is available on youtube. Picturisation wise, this is a two part song and the ‘mukhda’ is only repeated in the third part. I would like to thank all the music lovers who have uploaded this as well as other songs of this movie.

Now, after watching the video of this song it is clear to me that this is a ‘background song’ in the movie and in the movie it is played three times, where only the mukhda is repeated towards the end of this movie. The first part is played with the ‘titles’ of this movie, so this falls in the category of the ‘title song’ as well.

“Jaane Anjaane” (1971) was a ‘Shakti Films’ presentation. It was produced and directed by Shakti Samanta. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Leena Chandavarkar, Sandhya Roy, Vinod Khanna, Helen, Sulochana, Lalita Pawar, K. N. Singh, Dhumal, Sajjan, Gulshan Bawra, Birbal, Murad, Sadhna Patel, Kanu Roy, Sujata Bakshi, Kundan, Master Sachin, Master Shahid, Master Manoj, Satyendra Kapoor, A. K. Tiwari, Darshan and Jayant in it.

Story of this movie was written by Madhusudan Kalelkar. Its dialogues were written by Vrajendra Gaur and editing was done by Govind Dalwadi.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 17.05.1971.

As per HFGK this film had total seven songs in it. Music for this film was composed by Shankar-Jaikishan. Three lyricists – Hasrat Jaipuri – four songs, S.H.Bihari – two songs and Gulshan Bawra- one song shared these seven songs. Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Manna Dey, Mohd Rafi, Sharda and Suman Kalyanpur gave their voices to these songs.

Today’ song is penned by Hasrat Jaipuri and sung by Kishore Kumar. Music is composed by Shankar-Jaikishan.

HFGK doesn’t mention today’s song as a ‘multi part song’ in its list. So that way it may have been recorded as a one part song but it was used three times in the movie.

Let us now enjoy this one of the Kishore Kumar’s ‘early seventies’ songs, which was still missing on the blog …

Jaane anjaane log miley
Magar koyi mila na apnaa aa aa aa
Kya kya hamne sochaa thhaa
Reh gayaa ban ke sapnaa
O o o

Milaa na koi aisaa insaan
Dil kaa dard mitaataa aa
Kam se kam do baat to kartaa
Dil ki aas bandhaataa
Milaa na koi aisaa insaan
Dil kaa dard mitaataa
Kam se kam do baat to kartaa
Dil ki aas bandhaataa
Dard bharaa hai afsaana
Bhaag mein likhaa tadapnaa
O o o
Jaane anjaane log miley
Magar koi mila na apnaa
aa aa aa
Jaane anjaane

Aas niraas ke doraahe par
Dil to hamaara tootaa
Is kismat ne dheere dheere
Apnaa sab kuchh lootaa
Aas niraas ke doraahe par
Dil to hamaara tootaa aa
Is kismat ne dheere dheere
Apnaa sab kuchh lootaa
Aas niraas ke doraahe par
Dil to hamaara tootaa
Is kismat ne dheere dheere
Apnaa sab kuchh lootaa

Bheeg chuki hain ye palken
Bhool gaye ham hansnaa
O o o
Jaane anjaane log miley
Magar koi mila na apnaa
Aa aa aa

Different countries have their own Children’s day. For India, 14 november is celebrated as Children’s day. So today(14 november 2016) is Children’s day in India.

We have discussed quite a few Children’s songs in this blog during Children’s day as well on other days. One would like to think that there are not too many songs in Hindi movies that can be described as children’s songs.

Guess what ! I came across a fantastic children’s songs a few months ago. I earmarked it to be discussed on the next children’s day, which happens to be today.

This movie is quite a well known movie with well known songs that in fact have gone on to become immortal. I am surprised that a song as fantastic as this ended up remaining so unsung that I was not even aware of it till sometime back.

The movie is “Kaabuliwaala”(1961). Yes, it is a movie that has such immortal songs as Ae mere pyaare watan, Ganga aaye kahaan se, and O saba kahna mere dildaar ko .

“Kaabuliwaala”(1961) was based on a story of the same name penned by Ravindranath Tagore. This is a moving tale of a Kabuliwaala wo leaves his family (including his daughter) behind in Afghanistan and comes to Calcutta where he befriens a small girl called Mini, who reminds him of his daughter back home. This is a tale that I read in my Hindi text book in 1970s and I regard this story as one of the best story that I have ever come across.

When I checked up, I found taht this movie had four songs in it. With the above three songs already discussed, only one song was left to be discussed. When I searched for the remaining song and located it, I felt as if I had hit paydirt-as they said in American novels🙂. What a gem of a song !

This song is a dream song, where Mini, the young girl, is missing the Kabuliwaala whom she had not seen for several days. In this song, a bird takes her to the old woman living in the moon. That old woman tells Mini where to find Kabuliwaala. Following the clues given by the old woman, Mini located Kabuliwaala.

This great fun song is sung by Ranu Mukherji, Savita Bannerji, Usha Mangeshkar and Hemant Kumar, with the voice of Asit Sen , the comedian (playing Bhola, the domestic help in Mini’s household) is also audible.

Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music of this song is composed by Salil Chaudhary.

I have not been able to get a few words right in the lyrics. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections wherever applicable.

With this fantastic children’s song, “Kabuliwaala”(1961) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

“Santaan”(1946) was directed by Ramprakash and B Damania for Janak Pictures, Bombay. This movie had Nayampalli, Benjamin, Rehana, Lalita Pawar, David, Girish, Hemawati, Janak, Irshad, Viman Bannerji, Sumati Gupte, Raj Shekhar, Prashand Pandey, S Ranjan etc in it.

There were nine rare songs in this rare movie. One such song has been covered in the blog in the past. Here is the second rare song from “Santaan”(1946) to appear in the blog. This song, going by its lyrics can be called the title song of the movie.

This song is sung by a female singer in Bangla style of playback singing. I am unable to identify the voice. I request our knowledgeable readers to help identify her.

Anjum Pilibhiti is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ramchandra Pal.

Only the audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.

“Zameen Ke Taare”(1960) was produced by Navinchandra Shah and directed by Chandulal Shah for Chandra movies, Bombay. The movie had Abbas, daisy Irani, Anwar, Motilal, Achla sachdev, Kumud Tripathi, Charlie, Bhagwan, Madhumati, Tuntun, Krishna Kumar, Popat, Mumtaz, amir, Mohan Modi, Abdul, Mohini, Saroj, Hamida, Shiela, Prema, Shobha, Chandu, amrit, Bharat, Dushyant, Banarasi etc in it.

The movie had eight songs in it that were sung by four singers and they were penned by three lyricists.

One song from this movie has been discussed in the past. On going through that writeup, I notice that the song was discussed five years ago and at that time I had gone to a place where even electricity was a luxury and internet was certainly so.🙂 So the first song of this movie brings back some not so fond memories.🙂 But it also shows the kind of determination and motivation I was able to summon those days that I could still manage to discuss songs even from such places.😉

Here is the second song from “Zameen Ke Taare”(1960), which is being discussed while being located at a place exactly 1000 km to the west of the place from where I discussed the first song of the movie five years ago.🙂

This song is sung by Asha Bhonsle, Sudha Malhotra and chorus. Pt Indra Chandra is the lyricist. Music is composed by S Mohinder.

The song is picturised as a children’s stage performance song. There are two main children in the picturisation and I can only identify Daisy Irani out of them who as usual plays a boy in the picturisation.🙂 I wonder if the other kid playing girl is a boy.🙂

They are subsequently joined by other children who sing as chorus in this song which is the title song of the movie as well.

So today is the 81st birthday of our favourite “he-man” (a tag like the angry-young-man tag that was given to Amitabh Bachchan a long time ago.)

Born in Punjab and loved the world over he is an actor first who went on to become a producer to launch his sons in filmdom. He was possibly the only actor to have sailed successfully through the Rajesh Khanna and then the Amitabh Bachchan wave. He had a hold on comedy too -“Chupke Chupke” is a case in point. So today we are celebrating Dharamendra.

He is the recipient of the civilian award Padma Bhushan in 2012. His debut was in the 1961 Arjun Hingorani produced and directed “Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere”. Their association went on for about thirty years.

His first action movie was O.P.Ralhan’s “Phool Aur Pathar”; the 1971 “Mera Gaon Mera Desh” only confirmed his action hero status. He has worked with directors of various styles from Bimal Roy (Bandhini) to Hrishikesh Mukherjee (Guddi etc) to Pramod Chakravarty etc.

His pairing with Hema Malini was the most loved (any doubts here) but he was also comfortable with Asha Parekh, Tanuja, Nutan, Waheeda, Sharmila, Mumtaz, Rakhee, or the later heroines like Rekha, Zeenat, Parveen, Anita Raaj, Sridevi or Jaya Prada. He was a male costar who had equal standing in movies which were multi starrers i.e. where there were two or more male leads. He has sung in the voices of all the leading sigers of the Hindi film world be it Mohd. Rafi, Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Mahendra Kapoor, Manna Dey or even some of the playback singers who followed these legendary singers. All the voices seemed to suit him.

So where does all these talks lead us? To a problem. What problem? Problem of a wide range to choose from.

So how does one solve the problem? Think up a song and check (and hope) that it is not yet posted. What foloows is that many of the songs in my list are already posted ad movies of the Garam- Dharam that are yet to be yyiippeed only have one or two songs left but those are not filmed on our dear Dharam paaji.

But I have not given up, I have zeroed in on a very entertaining song which does justice to Dharamendra’s comic timing. And as an icing to the cake it is in the voice of the redoubtable Kishore Kumar. The song was written by Anjaan and Bappi (disco) Lahiri was the music director. Here is Anita Raaj is the Biwi to whom Dharamendra plays a “Naukar”. (I am sure many girls of that time would have died to have a “Naukar” like this *😉 Omprakash is Dharam’s grandfather-in-law here. Nishi Kohli gave playback in this song to Anita Raaj.

So wishing our Dharamendra a very Happy Birthday let us have the song.

Debaki Bose (1898 – 1971) is regarded as one of the pioneers in the field of film direction along with P C Barua, V Shantaram and Nitin Bose. After the production of talkie films started in 1931, Debaki Bose joined New Theatres and got his first chance to show his directorial skills in ‘Puran Bhagat’ (1933). This film is regarded as a turning point in the realm of talkie films. For the first time, the dialogue deliveries by actors were made more like natural talk than in the loud voices with theatrical gestures which was carried over to the films from the theatres. Debaki Bose also used expressions of the actors to supplement the dialogues.

The importance of Debaki Bose in New Theatres can be judged from the fact that he was the only director in early 1930s who was allowed to take directorial assignments outside New Theatres. He directed ‘Seeta’ (1934) for East India Film Company with Prithviraj Kapoor and Durga Khote as lead actors who were in the pay roll of New Theatres. ‘Seeta’ (1934) was the first talkie film from India to be shown in any international film festival. The film won a Honorary Diploma for Debaki Bose in Venice Film Festival.

Debaki Bose directed successful films for New Theatres like ‘Rajrani Meera’ (1933), ‘Inquilab’ (1935), ‘Sapera’ (1936), ‘Vidyapati’ (1937) and ‘Nartaki’ (1940) which was his last film with New Theatres. Thereafter, he was ly a freelance director during which time he directed films for some of the Bombay based film production companies also. Post-1940 period, he directed ‘Apna Ghar’ (1942), ‘Swarg Se Sundar Desh Hamaara’ (1945), ‘Meghdoot’ (1945), ‘Krishna Leela’ (1946), ‘Chandrasekhar’ (1947), ‘Ratnavali’ (1951) among others. It would appear that ‘Kavi’ (1954) was his last Hindi film as a director.

APNA GHAR (1942) was produced under the banner of Circo Productions, Bombay (Mumbai) and it was directed by Debki Bose, his first directorial venture outside Calcutta (Kolkata) for a Hindi film. Shanta Apte and Chandramohan played the lead roles. Other supporting cast included Maya Banerjee, Jagdish Sethi, Jeevan, Vimla Vashisht, Vimal Sardesai, David, Gope, Mahesh Kaul, Maruti Rao etc. For Shanta Apte, the film was her return to acting in Hindi film after ‘Gopalkrishna’ (1938).

It was a rare occasion when Baburao Patel’s ‘Filmindia’ magazine commended the film in its review published in April 1942 issue for “unusual story, excellent direction of Debaki Bose and superb acting by Chandramohan and Shanta Apte”. The story of the film which I have tried to condense from the review is as under:

Narendra (Chandramohan) has turned recluse after the accidental death of his wife. With his self-imposed isolation from the society, he develops individualism and loses sight of emotional values of life. Over a period of time, the inherent goodness in him gets lost and he becomes stubborn in his approach to life.

One day, Narendra, on one of his visits to the city, accidentally meets Meera (Shanta Apte), a social worker and the daughter of an old and infirm father. Some arguments ensue between them over the charges levelled against her father for committing some fraud in the company for which he works. Narendra happens to be one of the directors of that company. The father is asked to give up all his possessions to make good the fraud. The demand makes him sick and he is on his death bed.

Realising the sacrifices her father made in bringing her up and to help her father to die as a happy man, Meera agrees to marry Narendra. Since the marriage was more of a bargain than for love for each other, differences in views come to the fore. Meera is a strong willed girl having definite views on life. Narendra has also uncompromising views on life which he has developed after living in isolation. The married life of Narendra and Meera, therefore, becomes a clash of egos.

At this stage, Mami (Vimla Vashisht), Narendra’s maternal aunt joins the family and creates more problems for the couple. At the same time, on a social front, Meera is on a collision course with Narendra when she encourages the local villagers to resist Narendra’s autocratic orders instead of meekly following them. With strong arm tactics, Narendra crushes the villagers’ rebellion. Many such skirmishes take place between Meera and Narendra as clashes between social worker versus director of the company which create friction in their married life.

Meera is expecting her first child and she is in a delicate condition. Narendra on the other hand has gone to the city for his medical check-up. Meera delivers a boy and the news makes Narendra to leave his medical check half way to be with Meera. But the circumstances make him unable to see his infant child. He suspects a conspiracy to keep him away from the new born son.

Meera becomes a tool in the hands of Mami who creates an impression that the child should be kept away from the evil eyes of Narendra who is eager to see his infant child. One day, Narendra rushes to the house and demands for the child to be handed over to him at gunpoint. Being afraid that her child would be shot, Meera hands over the child to Narendra. Having lost respect for her husband, she runs out of the house leaving the child at the mercy of Narendra. While crossing the river, she accidentally falls in the river and is presumed dead. The fact is that she is saved by some fishermen and she staying at a place some miles away from the house.

The child soon gets ill and Narendra, with his insensitivity embedded in his nature, is not able to judge the seriousness of the situation. The child is now seriously ill and on the last stage before death snatches him away. At this juncture, Narendra gets the news that Meera is alive and living few miles away from his house. With news of illness of the child reaching her, she rushes home only to get the news that her child is no more.

Meera refuses to believe that her child is dead. She holds the child and walks in the room the entire night. When the doctor comes to the house in the morning to take the child away from her, he finds the child to be alive. A mother’s faith has created the miracle.

Having found the child hale and hearty, Meera prepares to leave the house. But the husband and wife have now found a common ground to live together – the well-being of their child and the work for the social upliftment of downtrodden and deprived people some of whom had saved Meera from drowning.

The film had 7 songs, all written by Narottam Vyas and sung by Shanta Apte. All songs were set to music by H C Bali. I am presenting the first song ‘apna desh hai apna ghar’ from the film to appear in the Blog. This is a song with a message to treat the country like our own house where we respect each other’s views, help each other and try to live in harmony.

With this song, ‘Apna Ghar’ (1942) makes its debut in the Blog.

“Kal Hamaara Hai”(1959) was produced by K Amarnath and directed by S K Prabhakar for K Amarnath Productions. The movie had Madhubala, Bharat Bhooshan, Lila Chitnis, Jayant, Jagdev, Jeevankala, Hari Shivdasani, Ramlal, Wazir Mohammed Khan, Brahm Bhardwaj, Lalit Kapoor, Heera, Deepak, Bishan Khanna, Amrit Rana etc in it.

There were seven songs in the movie. As many as three of them have appeared in the blog in the past.

On the occasion of Rafi’s 92nd birth anniversary today (24 december 2016), here is the title song of the movie which is sung by "Kal Hamaara Hai"(1959).

"aaj apna ho na ho par kal hamaara hai"- this optimistic title song of the movie is penned by Shailendra. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

We need to thank the artists of songs like this for continuing to make people feel optimistic about our future despite there being too little to cheer about in their lives. The sentiments expressed in this song nearly six decades ago about Indians would hopefully come true in our lifetimes.

“Matwaala”(1958) was directed by M A Thirumugam for Saraswati Pictures. The movie had Ranjan, Baliah, Anjali Devi, E. V. Saroja, P. S. Verappan, M. K. Radha etc in it.

This obscure movie had seven obscure songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Matwaala”(1958) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Rafi. Hargovind is the lyricist. Music is composed by R Sudarshanam.

Only the audio of this song is avaialable. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the movie as well as on the picturisation of this song. The word “Matwaala” figures a few times in the song and that makes this song the theme cum title song of the movie.

With this song, “Matwaala”(1958) makes its debut in the blog.

Song-Sach ki hogi jeet sadaa (Matwaala)(1958) Singer-Rafi, Lyrics-Hargovind, MD-R Sudarshanam

“Naiyya”(1979) was directed by Prashant Nanda for Chanda Pictures, Bombay. And all these days I was under the impression that this movie was a Rajshree Productions movie. 🙂

The movie had Zarina Wahab, Prashant Nanda (new discovery, as they say), Baldev Khosa, Dinesh Thakur, Leela Mishra, Mohammad Mohsin (another new discovery), Jageerdaar, Dinesh Hingoo, Nandlal Sharma, c S Dubey, Shail Chaturvedi, Shivraj, Amrish Puri, Pardesi, Om Tripathi, Shankar Bhake, Manmauji, Rooplekha etc, along with guest appearances by Sulochana, Shubha Khote and Jayshree T.

I remember this movie for its music. Going by the cast as well as the music, I was under the impression that this movie was an archtypical Rajshree Production movie. It is quite a news to me that it is not so.

Two songs from the movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from “Naiyya”(1979) to appear in the blog.

This song is sung by Yesudas and chorus. Ravindra Jain is the lyricist as well as the music director.

This extremely sweet and hummable song is picturised as a fisherman song on boats on a river on Prashant Nanda and others. This song happens to be the movie opening song as well as the theme cum title song. so one can say that this song wears many hats.

“Hamkadam”(1980) was produced by Tarachand Barjatya and directed by Anil Ganguly for Rajshree Productions, Bombay. The movie had Rakhee Gulzar, Parikshat Sahni, A.K.Hangal, Dina Pathak, Ritu Kamal, Helen, Biswajeet, Iftekar, Madan Puri, Dinesh Hingoo, Preetam, Pardesi, Partho Guha, Harish Mugan, Deepak, Chaturvedi, John Boland, Amol Sen, Anand Joshi, Pilloo Wadia, Nilu Arora, Komal Soni, Zubeda, Anita, Rajni Verma, Master Ashoo, Sameena Kashimiri, Baby Geeta Khanna etc in it.

The movie had three songs in it. One song from the movie is already discussed in the past. The remaining two songs are multiple version song, so they can be covered in one writeup, and so this song comes quite handy in our bid to get one movie YIPPEED every day. 🙂

This song has a duet version sung by Shailendra Singh and Aarti Mukherji and a solo version sung by Aarti Mukherji. Both versions are picturised on Parikshat Sahni and Raakhi. Master Aashoo, playing their kid, can be seen in the duet version.

M G Hashmat is the lyricist. Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri. Yes, there was a time when Bappi Lahiri used to compose music for Rajshree Productions as well.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.
