Today’s song is from a comedy film “Haa haa hee hee hoo hoo”(1955) (called HHH hereafter).
Some days back, I saw a comment on the Blog, made by one of the visitors, who complained that songs from the films of the 50’s decade are not posted here these days. I don’t remember his exact words, but the gist,I suppose , was this. Atul ji had replied to him appropriately. However, when I checked my own posts on songs from the 50s, I found that from January 2020 to July 2020 end, I had written 10 posts on 50’s songs. Perhaps the reader was complaining about Shankar Jaikishan songs of the 50s. Maybe.
From the statistics of the decade wise songs, the maximum number of songs discussed are from the decade of 1951 tg 1960 – 5014 songs. I do not have my own statistics of posts written on decade wise songs, but even I must have written maximum posts on 50’s songs, closely followed by the 40’s songs. There are still plenty of songs from the 50’s to be discussed and I am planning to take up at least a few of them – with an eye on Shankar Jaikishan songs – for my posts in coming time. Maybe we will stumble upon some hidden Gems among the remaining songs !
Today’s film HHH-55 was a comedy film. From the beginning of the Talkie films, till about the late 70s, comedy and comedians were an inseparable part of the Hindi films. A common man going to the theatre to see a film wants to spend happy times. Normally important ingredients of a film like Comedy, Fights or Conflicts, successful Love story and good Music were enough for any moviegoer.
Comedy has been an essential part of human life for a long time. Bharat Muni (200 B.C.) has described the Navarasas in his book “Natyashastra”. He talks about “Hasya-Ras” in it. For comedy, the early Kings used to maintain a “Vidushak” (Court Jester) in their Darbar. Every Sanskrit drama will have a Vidushak in it. When film making started in India, many silent films had comedians in their films. However for lack of sound the films lost the verbal jokes etc. After the Talkie started, it was an opportunity for Fun makers to feature in them. Thus started the Comedian’s role in films.
The first year of Talkie had films on such topics that there was no scope for Comedy. However, from the next year,i.e. 1932, comedy films were made. India’s First Comedy film “Muflis Ashiq”-32 was made by Madon Theatres. It was closely followed by Ranjit’s “Char Chakram”, featuring Ghory and Dixit- the Pioneer comedy pair of Hindi films. They operated together from 1932 to 1947. They were likened to Laurel and Hardy of the Hollywood films. Unfortunately, none of their films survived.
In the early Cinema comedians like Ghori and Dixit, Noor Mohd. Charlie, Bhudo Advani, Damuanna Malvankar, Master Vinayak, V H Desai, Gope, Yakub, Jeevan, Mirza Musharraf etc operated full steam. From the late 40s to late 70s, a big band of small and big comedians acted in films. Each one had a special style . Some comedians formed a pair – like Gope and Yakub, Johar and Majnu, Johar and Mehmood, Mehmood and Dhumal etc. The other comedians were Master Bhagwan, Agha,Jagdeep,Radhakishen,Mukri, Sunder, Anup kumar, Rajendranath,Asit Sen, Mohan Choti, Keshto Mukherjee, Kamal Mehra, Jankidas etc etc. Major comedians were Kishore Kumar ( according to author Sanjit Narwekar he was a “reluctant Comedian”), Mehmood, Omprakash and Johnny Walker. Films were made for them, as they commanded their own audiences.
After the rise of Amitabh Bachhan, in the latter part of the 70s the importance of comedians in the films started diminishing, because the Heroes themselves started doing the Comedy part. Remember the typical MMD films of Bachhan and those of Dharmendra. Slowly almost all the heroes did the comedy. Infact the story and Dialogues were made out such that even actors like Govinda did comedy films. Now of course, I dont find any specialist comedians in films anymore. The comedian had a tragic death !
There were many comedy films made in Hindi. I have seen many of them, but my favourite Comedy films are Bhagam Bhag-56, New Delhi-56, Chalti ka naam Gaadi-57 and among the later ones- Chupke Chupke-75 and lastly Chameli ki Shaadi-86. Some comedians like Kishore Kumar and Mohan Choti produced Çomedy’films like “Badhati ka naam dadhi”and ” Dhoti, Lota aur Dukan””, but they were not successful at all. Comedy films in India are made on one of these themes-
a. Situational Comedy
b. Mistaken Identity
c. Exchanged identities and
d. Funny stories.
Today’s film HHH-55 was supposed to be based on more than one ingredient listed above. The story of this film was…
The chief artiste of the ” Ha Ha Dancing Party “- Kamala is unmarried. her mother Kalavati, contacts a Marriage Broker, Chaupatlal and fixes her marriage with a wealthy prince Kumar. Unfortunately, Kumar loses all his wealth and the title after the merger of his state in India. He becomes poor, but decides to marry a rich bride. The broker Chaupatlal suggests Roopmati-daughter of Rai Saheb Deen dayal. Same time the broker informs another client, a poor young man called Kumar, that he can not help him. The letters are wrongly delivered.
As a consequence the poor Kumar, with his uncle, reaches Hotel Rajmahal to meet the rich bride Roopmati and her father. But Kamalas friends introduce Kamla to this Kumar and they promptly fall in love. Same time Roopmati with Deen dayal reaches Rajmahal hotel and wants to marry this Kumar. At this juncture the Prince Kumar also reaches there to complicate the matter.
Anyway, to the relief of everyone in the audience, the pairs are Poor Kumar and Kamala and Prince Kumar with Roopmati. Both marriages take place and the film ends in a Happy mood.
With this kind of predictable story line, there was very little to laugh. The film was directed by P L Santoshi, who tried the same formula many times in his films. The film was produced by Raja Nene. The film was censored on 23rd and released on 27th May 1955. The cast of the film was Shyama, Sajjan, Ranjana, Raja Gosavi, Vasant Shinde, Mirza Musharraf, Prakash, Sulochana, P,Kailash, Heera Sawant etc etc.
Among the cast, the name of P.Kailash who had worked as a Hero in the past, may be a matter of surprise for some readers. For a long time, I was very curious about this actor. One day I was reading a book ” Asli Nakli Chehre ” ( असली नकली चेहरे ) by Vithal Pandya. In this book, he has given information about P.Kailash, who did the main role in the film ” Jai Hanuman-48″, for which Pandya was an assistant Director. Vithal Pandya had spent over 30 years in the film industry from the 30s and 40s. He worked with many directors and under many banners. He wrote 2 books in Gujarati/Hindi, which are highly informative with first hand knowledge. For example, he mentions that S N Tripathi, the Music Director was also an actor and was famous in the role of Hanuman in all Wadia movies. However in this film-Jai Hanuman-48, he had done the role of Ravan. Anyway, based on information in this book coupled with an article by M N Sardana ji, on the Fb page ‘Woh din yaad karo’ about P.Kailash, here is some information on P.Kailash for our readers. My thanks to both of them.
Mr P Kailash (Pandit Kailash Chandra Sharma), was born on 03 February 1924 at Multai, a small town in Distt Betul ( Madhya Pradesh ). After doing H.S.C., he did a stint of teaching in Akola. Bestowed with sharp features, and deep voice, fair coloured P Kailash came to Bombay in 1946 to become an actor. He did not have to wait for much longer to have an entry in the film line .
Seth Chandulal Shah gave him a chance in his mythological movie Jai Hanuman ,as the hero opposite Nirupa Roy . The movie, made under the banner of Ranjit Movietone, was directed by Ramchandra Thakur. Thereafter, Mr Kailash appeared in many mythological, fantasy and historical movies like Veer Durga Das, Sati Anusuiya, Maha Bharat, Prabhu Ki Mahima, Veer Arjun, Gopal Krishna, Nadir Shah, Thief Of Baghdad, Hercules, Aab E Hayat, Gul E Bakawali etc. In 1953, he performed as a cop in Ranjit Mvietone’s Papi ,along with Raj Kapoor. With Dilip Kumar, he did a role which had comic shades in Leader. Shirin Farhad, made by veteran filmmaker Aspi Irani, was another movie in which his performance was much appreciated .
Mr P Kailash appeared in numerous movies made by Filmmakers like Shree Ram Bohra, B K Adarsh and Filmistan. Maine Jeena Seekh Liya, Hum Kahan Ja Rahe Hain ,Picnic ,Baba Sari Ladli (Rajasthani), Jekra Charnwa Mein Lagle Pranwa (Bhojpuri), Love and Murder were the movies , Mr P Kailash did for the said film makers.
Versatile director Krishan Chopra (May God Bless His Soul),who died before completing his second movie, gave him a lifetime role of a tyrannical landlord in Heera Moti which was based upon the heart warming story Do Bailon Ki Katha, written by great writer Prem Chand. He brought alive the arrogant and heartless Zamindaar on the screen with his dynamic performance.
Krishan Chopra, impressed with the magnificent personality of Mr P Kailash, gave him an important role in his next movie Gaban ,which was completed by Hrishkesh Mukherjee, after Mr Chopra passed away untimely. It was a sad coincidence that Mr P Kailash, also did not live long. While on a visit to his birth place Multai, he suffered a massive heart attack and left for his heavenly abode on 23 May 1967. Payal Ki Jhankaar, made by Filmistan and Thief of Baghdad by Mr Shree Ram Bohra were released later, after he had gone forever at the young age of 43 years, leaving behind his two daughters, one son and wife .
P.Kailash acted in 43 films. His first film was Jai Hanuman-48 and the last released film was Irada-1971.
Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhosale and Chorus. Written by P L Santoshi, it is composed by Vinod, MD of the film. Enjoy…..
(Thanks to book “Eena Mina Dika” by Sanjit Narwekar, for some points).
